FMCA SURGERY DEPARTMENT PERFORMS 1722 SURGERIES

A total number of 1722 surgeries were carried out by the Department of Surgery at the Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta last year. This figure was 656 higher than 1066 that was recorded in 2018.
A breakdown of the surgeries showed that General Surgery took the lead by 641, followed by Paediatric , 503, Urology 264, Plastic 208, CTSU 59 and Neuro 49.
Dr. M.O Olanrewaju of the department, made this disclosure in a paper entitled “ Department of Surgery Year 2019 Morbidity and Mortality Overview” presented at the End of the Year Get –together of the department held at the residence of the Medical Director, Prof Adewale Musa-Olomu.
Speaking further, Dr Olanrewaju disclosed that a total number of 3044 admissions were recorded in the period under review as against 1427 and 1939 that were recorded in 2017 and 2018 respectfully.
Dr Olanrewaju hinted that the department was looking forward to the accreditation of Residency training for both post-graduate colleges this year while it also hoped to commence minimal access and endoscopy surgery in all divisions.
The ceremony witnessed the presentation of awards to Dr Baraqah Ojelade who emerged the Best House-Officer in 2019, while Dr. R.O Adegboyega got the Best Resident Doctor award in Surgery in 2019. The Best Surgery Administrative staff award went to Mrs. F.O Ajise. A recognition award as host was presented to the Medical Director, Prof.Musa-Olomu .
Speaking at the colourful event, the Medical Director, appreciated the sense of dedication to duty, discipline and perseverance by the Surgeons. He assured them that his administration will not leave any stone unturned towards the accreditation of residency training of the department this year.
He dedicated the award to the entire Theatre nurses.
